Why the greenhouse in your garage might be worth more than the greenhouses in your house

A garage in the United States could be worth an estimated $100,000 to $200,000 more than a home built with conventional materials, according to a study published in the journal Nature.

The study examined a garage in Houston, Texas, and the Greenhouse Alliance, a group of builders and environmental advocates who are campaigning to build more sustainable buildings, and found that the cost of a garage, when compared to the cost per square foot, was about 30 per cent more.

It’s an improvement on the cost in the 1950s, when it was nearly as high as the current cost per cubic metre, said the study’s lead author and professor of architecture at the University of Texas at Austin, Michael Lipscomb.

He said the Greenhouses Alliance is hopeful that the price of the garage will decline in the coming years.

“What we see now is a lot of the work that was done on the Green House Alliance is happening to the garage,” he said.

“The Greenhouse Act, the federal government’s legislation, requires the building of greenhouses.”

“That’s something that could be a major contribution to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the next couple of years.”

The study looked at the costs of building a home using conventional building materials and materials sourced from non-renewable sources.

The cost per sq m of the Green Houses Alliance’s Greenhouse Building Materials (CBM) was about $1,000.

That was a 30 per and a 40 per per cent decrease from a home that was built with the same materials in the 1960s, said co-author and professor Jason Schleicher, a former environmental planner at the US Department of Energy.

The Greenhouses Act requires that buildings built using the same building materials in a given year be built using 100 per cent recycled materials, meaning that they should not cost more than $20,000 per sq meter.

But Lipscom said the cost could have been significantly higher, if not entirely.

“This study suggests that the actual cost is probably lower than $100k per sqm, which is a big difference, but we can’t tell for sure,” he added.

“There are a number of factors that have a big impact on the total cost of building, and that include: environmental impact, economic impact, the type of roof and the type and quantity of materials that are used, and then the type, size and location of the buildings.”

In general, we don’t know how the total costs of a building would have been reduced in the absence of this legislation, but this is an indication that it’s probably possible.

“The Green House Association says the study shows that it is possible to create a home of sustainable design with conventional building material costs and a green roof that is environmentally friendly.

The organisation is lobbying the federal Government to adopt the Green Building Act as the basis for building new homes, and is also working to develop a Green Building Code, which would set a national standard for sustainable design, environmental protection and social justice.

The Federal Government is currently considering whether to require the Green house Association to provide information about its building materials for the purposes of its certification process.”

As part of its ongoing efforts to reduce carbon emissions and greenhouse gas, the Federal Government should ensure that all building materials are built using renewable materials, such as natural materials, renewable energy, and energy efficiency,” a spokesperson for the Department of the Environment said.

The US Environmental Protection Agency says the government’s new green building regulations should be the foundation for all new construction.”

While the Green Buildings Act is already the foundation of building regulations across the country, the EPA is proposing a comprehensive approach that will support building with sustainable building materials,” said an EPA spokesperson.”

For example, it will set new standards for building materials by building codes and the construction process.

EPA is also considering other measures to support the creation of green buildings, including providing additional incentives for building with energy efficiency.

“The spokesperson added that the EPA was working with other federal agencies to help ensure that the Green building standards would be applied to all new homes.”

We are also working with building materials manufacturers and retailers to identify the most environmentally friendly building materials available to the US market,” the spokesperson said.
