It may sound like a joke, but it’s true: the world is still building a huge greenhouse to support the growing world population.
That’s according to a report from the International Institute for Sustainable Development, which estimates that more than 2 billion people around the world will need a place to live by 2050.
And while the number of greenhouse buildings worldwide has grown to more than 1.3 billion, that’s still a huge number.

Source: Institute of Economic Affairs & Policy (IEAP) The International Institute of Sustainable Development estimates that there are currently around 2.8 billion people in the world, and of those, 1.8 to 2 billion will need to be able to live without food and water.
The IESD’s report, Global Growth, 2050, found that while most people will be living in areas with at least 10 hectares of farmland, the rest of the world would need to get by with an additional 500,000 hectares of land.
And that number is expected to double by 2050 if current trends continue.
While that’s a big chunk of land, the report also found that the amount of land required for that would be roughly equivalent to the area of Brazil, which has more than 7 billion people.
That means if we were to build an additional 3.6 billion hectares of farming land, it would add up to a total of 1.4 billion hectares, or around the size of the U.S. The report also estimated that there will be more than 400 billion tonnes of CO2 emissions generated by the global economy by 2050, so the world can no longer rely on just building the world-changing greenhouse.
“This is a global crisis and we must take action now,” the report states.
“We can do this because it is clear that greenhouse gases cannot be kept at a low level and that they will need more than ever.”
And the biggest barrier to sustainable building isn’t climate change, it’s economics.
While the report did find that some building materials have lower environmental impact than others, it also said that many materials can have more environmental impact if they are used in more sustainable ways.
For example, the study found that carbon offsets could make a huge difference to the environment.
However, carbon offsets aren’t the only way to make a difference to greenhouse gas emissions.
The institute also highlighted other ways in which building materials can help in the global fight against climate change.
“If we build new buildings we can also reduce the amount that people are going to be living on land and therefore reduce the greenhouse gas that they emit,” said Jana Mankovic, executive director of the IESO.
“And if we reduce the emissions from the energy systems we can help us achieve our climate targets.”
Building with green roofs will help the environment even more, too.
While some cities have begun to look at green roofs as a way to reduce the energy that’s used to build buildings, the IEP said that this approach won’t have a significant impact on greenhouse gas emission levels because of how it’s built.
Building with solar panels could help cut emissions even more.
The International Energy Agency has found that building roofs can reduce emissions of greenhouse gases from building by up to 40 percent.
But even more important is the idea that roofs can provide a way for people to build their homes with sustainable materials, as opposed to the more expensive and difficult alternative of using traditional building materials.
So, what about building with concrete?

The Institute for Building Materials (IBP) says that building with solid concrete, which is commonly used for roofing and concrete, can cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 40 percent, while concrete roofs can cut emissions by up a whopping 50 percent.
The good news is that building materials are becoming more environmentally friendly.
“Building with a concrete roof is an example of a material that is being improved by both the science and the design,” said Mankiewicz.
“In a lot of cases we have been able to get very low GHG emissions by using concrete, and the other material is a mixture of a mix of materials that are going through a process called ‘reuse.’
So, you can reuse materials and materials in a very sustainable way.”
So why are some building material companies investing in green roofs?
While building with a roofing material is more environmentally beneficial, there are some companies that aren’t investing in that kind of material at all.
The most notable of these companies is H-Works, a company that manufactures a type of roofing called Bamboo and is part of the Green Roof Initiative.
